Start

Like most people I have several interests in my life. But the one I want to concentrate on with this blog is my personal genealogy. I've been vaguely interested in it for decades, but it came to a head in 2000 when a lady from Vancouver Island asked an English local newspaper to help find her Norfolk relatives. I was one of those relatives.

It's turned out to be a fascinating journey, during which I've had conversations with lots of interesting, helpful people. It's a community of a sort.

It's also proved interesting from a sociological viewpoint. If the Daily Express thinks that single mothers are the invention of modern liberal values it doesn't know about my ancestors! What am I to make of a young man who adds his maternal grandparents' name to his own to create a new surname for himself?

Undoubtedly Internet opportunities have vastly expanded the interest in this activity. I wouldn't have been able to discover more than a tiny part of my tree without it in the time available. But, there'll always be more work to be done.
